This was their first release shortly after coming back to Canada from a
stint as Warren Zevon's backing band. This album isn't quite as accessible
as their later records like "Bedbug" (featuring the hilarious "Heterosexual
Man") or "Good Weird Feeling" (featuring "Eat My Brain). But, it does
contain the Grapes Of Wrath-ish '(Fucking) Wendy Under The Stars".>>

I would say that almost any fan of '90s power-pop deserves to pick up all 4
Odds albums--they're witty, smart, catchy, and sonically interesting (all that
fuzzbox guitar...yum). That said, "Neopolitan" is the weakest by a mile,
but, again, still worth owning. It's also out of print in the US so I'd snatch
it--if you're even remotely entertained (especially by the more power-poppy
songs like "No Warning" and "Eternal Ecstacy"--then pick up the later ones.

Also I think that "Play With Your Head" is perhaps my favorite Candy
Butchers album, oddly enough, so I definitely recommend that you revisit it. "Worry
My Dome" is possibly the catchiest thing Mike ever wrote, and "Make No
Mistake" and "I Let Her Get Away" are some of his most heart-wrenching songs. It's
definitely worth more listens. I agree with Andrea on "Hang On Mike"--for
some reason, the recorded product doesn't sound quite right. It was recorded a
bit too "dead", I think, and so the songs wind up feeling a bit half-done. Live
they sound better, and I've heard the demo for one song--"What To Do With
Michael"--and much prefer it to the finished product. Still, I agree with those
who say he's one of the best songwriters of the late 20th/early 21st
century, and feel that everything he's produced is worth owning. Also pick up the
"Live at LaBonbonierre", "Let's Get Serious" and Christmas EPs. --Jason
