From my perspective, hearing Smile 2004 would have been a much more
meaningful experience had I not heard the numerous bootlegs of the original
Smile which have appeared throughout the years. I have heard the new
version of "Heroes And Villains" that Andrew Hickey was speaking of, and I
must say it sounds pretty darn good. I noticed Brian had been doubled by
Foskett, which is certainly a good thing; all of the people who for the past
ten years have been claiming that Brian "still sounds as great as he ever
did" are a) either on some really powerful drugs, b) suffering from acute
"wishfulthinkingitis", or 3) not realizing that Foskett's vocals has been
shadowing Brian's. When you stop and think about it, why *would* Brian
sound as good as he ever did? The man is 62 years old, and has been through
more hell, drugs, and cigarettes than most people would never see in 10
lifetimes. Given what he's been through, it's a miracle he's still alive,
let alone recording and performing!

Having people like Darian Sahanaja and Nick Walusko of Wondermints, who are
among the most eloquent and devoted Beach Boys practitioners on the planet
in Brian's corner, has been absolutely invaluable to the re-evolution of
Brian's career. I expect the new Smile to be commensurately proficient from
a technical standpoint, and that it will offer some heretofore unheard
slants on the original songs. Will the project be as groundbreaking,
eyebrow raising, and as much of a landmark in Brian's career as it would
have been in 1967? My answer is: "of course not", but then again, I guess
it just wasn't made for these times.
