At a Todd show in late Dec 1995, (Cleveland/The Agora, I believe) there was
a lady who had spoken with Todd earlier in the day at a disc signing event
and had told him that she played piano and knew his song "Lucky Guy" (From
Hermit of Mink Hollow) by heart and wanted to play it for him.
At the show that night, Todd warily looked out in the audience and asked if
she was present...and then told the story to the crowd that this person
claimed to know the song/claimed that they could nail it...etc. You could
tell that Todd was a bit uneasy about letting her onstage...and it appearred
to me from his tone of voice that he felt that he was opening the door for
her to severely embarrass herself in front of a sold out crowd of diehard
fans.
She came forth...walked to the piano..sat down...and proceeded to play the
most beautiful rendition of the song I had ever heard. It was one of those
"pin-drop" moments as the entire audience (Todd included) watched in
amazement as she nailed the tune perfectly.
When she was finished, Todd went over and led her to the edge of the stage
as the crowd went nuts.
It was a truly amazing sight to behold...and I think Todd was truly taken
back by the offering.
OK...now for one of those sing-along story.....
Setting: Phoenix, Nov. '93...the "Pod" tour backing up the disc "No World
Order"...
We were right up front...and as Todd broke into "Feel Too Good" (from
Utopia's "Deface The Music"), he allowed those nearest to the circular steel
pod to come up on the lower level of the Pod. He jumped down from the upper
level...and lead the participants round and round the "Pod" (you had to see
it to know what I'm talking about) while he sang the tune....or should I say
as he *tried* to sing the tune.
I was pretty buzzed at the time...and as things got rolling...everyone was
grabbing the shoulders or hips of those in front of them as we moved 'round
and round the structure.
I always loved that tune...and as such...started singing along...(out of key
as always, so shoot me). After a few lines...the hands touching my waist
from behind pulled me backwards a bit...and I turned to see that it was
Michele (Gray) Rundgren (once a dancer with the Tubes). She leaned towards
my ear..and said "you know the words better than Todd...maybe YOU should be
up there instead of him!"
Yeah...right.
As a bonus... my camera had be confiscated at the door...and when I told Ms.
Rundgren about it as we were basically crowded off the stage, she told us
when/where to be to get to meet Todd after the show. T'was my first meeting
(of many)...and she recanted the entire story...singing/camera and all to
Todd as he/we stood outside and waited for the limo. By then I have gotten
my camera back from the Nazi's at the door...and when Michele saw it in my
hand as they started to drive away, she yelled for the driver to stop....and
stop he did, just as I snapped a few close-up pictures of TR and shook his
hand as they again started to drive away.
Anyway..it was a great time/great night...and it made the 700 mile drive
from Colorado well worth it.
