I have a couple bootleg CDs of 70's live Steely Dan, plus the audio of the
Midnight Special performances mentioned by Brian Kassan. The band in all
stages sound pretty good to me - I'm sure that that likely varied to some
degrees over the course of time due to the usual factors (sound, health,
chemical/alcohol intake, etc.). The latter day early lineup can't have
sounded bad very often: Fagen on vocals & keyboards, Becker on bass, Skunk
& Dias on guitars, Michael McDonald on keyboards & vocals, Royce Jones -
percussion & vocals, and Jim Hodder & Jeff Porcaro on drums. Hell, one of
the bootlegs I have features Skunk as lead vocalist on "My Old School" and
he's damn good! Donald was never crazy about being the front man (hence
David Palmer on the first album), and still spread the lead vocal around as
much as he could (McDonald chimed in on "Pretzel Logic" and Jones sang "Any
Major Dude" & "Brooklyn").

If someone here does decide to do a Steely Dan tribute, be sure to let me
know - we Oohs would gladly participate, many tunes come to mind as do-able.

Brioohs
