OK, it was more than a bit ironic that my good friend (and fellow Audities member) Mike Kropp had recently lent me the remastered and expanded edition of the James Brown Live At The Apollo CD, particularly after seeing this past Sunday's Prince concert at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

On Sunday, I honestly felt I was witnessing the 2004 version of that monumental concert. Maybe it was the way Prince melded his hits into extended medleys, maybe it was the outrageous dance moves, maybe it was the tightness of the band, maybe it was the showmanship, maybe it was because Maceo Parker is in his current band---yeah, I know Maceo was not in the JB Band that played at the Apollo---but hey, the connection is there, maybe it was because---like JB and only a handful of other artists--Prince can bring an audience of Black, White, Asian, Latino, Baby-Boomers, Gen-Xers, Straights, Gays, etc., to their feet and dance for over 2 hours!

How many other musicians can cause a subway car full of strangers to erupt into a raucous version of "Little Red Corvette" on a joyous ride home? If you get a chance, catch this tour. The musicianship and the showmanship are not to be missed.

Here is a link to a very positive review of Sunday's concert by the Philadelphia Inquirer's Tom Moon:
