I realize I am way late on this, but I have been
listening to "Hang On Mike" by the Candy Butchers
pretty much non-stop for the past 10 days. I had
bought it when it first came out, listened to it once,
and put it away....I was still hoping for something
more in line with "Falling Into Place".
I decided to give it another spin and found that below
the breezy McCartneyesque pop, were lyrics as nakedly
painful as anything on "John Lennon/ Plastic Ono
Band"....in fact, it came to me that this could have
been what a "Paul McCartney/Plastic Ono Band" album
might have sounded like.
I can't think of another album, short of "JL/POB"
where the singer/writer wrote so much about himself,
in the first person and third person. I tend to be in
the camp where music trumps lyrics (meaning that a
well sung "la la la" means as much to me as Dylanesque
stuff), but this is an exception. "Painkillers" makes
the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
