You know, when I first heard Eugene, an Elvis Costello influence never
entered my mind. I guess I was too focused on the Tillbrook-like timbre of
his vocals to notice, but since that time the Elvis resemblance has been
mentioned by so many people that I now see where everyone's coming from.

Of all the things I've seen posted in the eight years I've been an Audities
member, this one hits the most perfect bullseye. IMHO, too many people are
too hung up on whether an artist or song sounds "too much like someone
else". I try to make music listening as much of a visceral experience as
possible, just letting it happen. If a song sounds good to my ears, then
it's good. It doesn't matter whether it's derivative of something
else...and if a song is completely, 100% original, but has no appeal to me,
then I'm not going to listen to it again.

The few times I have found myself annoyed by a song being "too derivative",
it's because the song really wasn't that good. I think that's the key-it's
like when you go on a date with someone and it doesn't work out; you reel
off a list of things that annoyed you about your date, and when you stop to
think about it you realize that if you had actually *liked* the person,
those things wouldn't have annoyed you very much, if at all.

Ok, maybe that was a silly analogy, but hopefully you see what I mean. :-)
