Perhaps I can use the following example to clarify what I meant. With Marshall Crenshaw's debut, you could hear how he used the Hollies and Beatles influences in his music, but I felt you could hear his own unique "voice" through those influences.
With Eugene's disk, the EC influences seem to outweigh Eugene's voice. As Greg mentioned, hopefully with later disks, that voice will come through. And I am more than willing to stick around for that....
