<< Go All The Way - The Raspberries
Why? I think most people would recognize it vaguely but have no idea
why. It would be hard to do well. If done well, it would bowl the crowd
over. >>
(WARNING! MORE OLDEN CAN-CON MEMORIES....)
My pal Roy's mid-Seventies barband The Specs (which I did lights and roadied
for) (...well, it was worth quitting University for, wasn't it?!!) used to
perform an entire third set of nothing but early Beatles, and snuck "Go All The
Way" plus such goodies as "I Can't Let Go" by the Hollies in there too.
People LOVED hearing Raspberries -- we did "Play On" as well ...it's funny to
recall though that this was all absolutely revolutionary, and sometimes
downright hazardous to our safety, in those dark-indeed daze of "Freebird" and
"Keep On Rockin' Me Baby" (not to mention forever competing with Hockey Night in O
Canada on the TV behind the bar).
But then -- and not a second too soon -- came that first Ramones album, and
we suddenly felt somewhat justified in our musical snobbishness. Of course, by
then The Specs had broken up ...just in time for us to regroup (as The Loved
Ones) and ditch the Fab set entirely for a killer three-quarters-of-an-hour
filled with Groovies, Boomtown Rats, Twilley, etc. We were the terror of the
Hamilton, Ontario YWCA circuit, yessir
....and Bullseye will be chronicling it all on a DVD / lecture tour any day
now, right Jaimie?
