Hi Eytan,

I was at the garage festival on Saturday, and am now damn sure what garage music sounds like - it seemed to me that over forty bands played the same song over and over.

So when a band like Big Star came on, it was a melodic breath of fresh air.

Ten random observations:

1. Cool to see the lingering image of Joe Parsons of Myracle Brah projected on a gigantic screen (he was the drummer for hire for the Contrast).

2. Even cooler to hear The Boss introduce The Boss Martians.

3. The Gripweeds, Frontier Index and the Lackloves were too good to play at a garage fest, so they played the next night at a Rainbow Quartz-thon at the Knitting Factory. And boy did these bands rock! The headliner, Outrageous Cherry, were more suited to the garage-fest bill.

4. Iggy Pop frightens me.

5. The Strokes deserve a more sober lead singer than Julian Casablancas. He seemed to be on a barbituate cocktail.

6. It was inspiring to see the the young fans run closer to the stage to see Bo Diddley.

7. I didn't think I would see ever The Stems, or Dom Mariani for that matter, perform in New York.

8. The revolving stage was the high-tech version of "the hook" when the stage spun the High Dials off-view in mid-song.

9. The only thing more bizarre than Nancy Sinatra tackling a Morrisey song is Nancy Sinatra singing a Sonic Youth song.

and most importantly -

10. Kudos to Little Steven for pulling it off.

See ya,
Sherman
