Wow, Steve! I didn't even know Happy Hare was still around. I grew up in San Diego listening to him in the 60's & 70's on KCBQ before it went country, then the dreaded talk format (and I still have an autographed photo of him lying around some place). In fact, I'm afraid my life long obsession to groovy audities-like tunes beyond the Beatles and Monkees can be directly attributed to this man, who was a true "DJ" back in the days when such was still actually legal in radio.

Geeez, the number of times I called him to make requests with my cassette recorder at the ready to get me by until allowance built up enough for the real-deal single.... And he ALWAYS played them and was sooooo friendly and exuberant on the phone!!! (Think David Bash gushingly introducing the next band at IPO). I remember one time he played a new song (No Time by the Guess Who, I think) and I called trying to get through for an hour to find out who it was by. He kept me on the phone for 10 or 15 minutes, playing different discs over the frickin phone to me in between songs and talking on the air, to help me figure out which song it was I was trying to describe! He was like your very own super cool big brother with a mega record collection! And a true, true fan of music. What a treat to see his name crop up again!

Subject: R.I.P. KPOP

Great loss to the SoCal airwaves...KPOP-AM (1360) in San Diego has opted for
(yawn) a talk show format.

And then there were the jocks, two of them possessing rock and roll radio
credentials. Harry "Happy Hare" Martin once helped push Joan Baez over a
fence so she could have a meeting with Lennon after a Beatles concert. He also
told a young and nervous Mick Jagger backstage that TV host Mike Douglas wouldn't talk trash
about the Stones as Dean Martin once did on "Hollywood Palace."
Rest in peace, KPOP.

Steve
