It's supposed to be a true story - Martha Reeves was also singing on many
demos
and backing vocals the same time she was also a secretary. 

Mary Wells was having contract disputes with Gordy by 1963 and later left
Motown for 20th Century Fox records for more money, and later recorded for
Atco
and Jubilee records. He carreer was never the same after she left Motown.
