If you have never been to the Motown Museum I highly recommend it. It is
worth a trip to Detroit.
They have pulled out one wall of the studio so you can walk thru it, but it
still is intact and exactly like it looked in pictures. You get to see the echo
chamber in the ceiling, it's just too cool. If you linger a bit in the studio
the guide will even point out where the musicians stood.
I mean, how cool is it to be able to say that you stood right where James
Jamerson did, in the Motown studio?
The guide was well informed with lots of great stories. My fav, Mary Wells
was supposed to sing lead on "Dancing in the Street". She was pulling some sort
of 'star' diva act (contract dispute?) and hadn't shown up to the session. So
Berry Gordy went out and got the studio secretary, who was Martha Reeves, to
sing it.
At least that's what the guide told us. It was a fascinating place.
