The book by Deanna Schwarz (...ish. I don't have the book anymore and
forget her name, but I know who you mean) was very useful for me back when
I was starting my label, but frankly, the biggest help I got was from folks
like Bruce (who was hugely helpful to Flamingo in the early days and was
one of only two distributors who consistently paid me on time -- to this
day, Cargo owes me a couple hundred bucks) and my friend Carl Petersen and
other folks who had done it before me.

The biggest piece of advice I can give anyone who starts a record label is
this: be prepared to say goodbye to really rather a lot of money, because
pretty much the best you can hope for is that you'll make enough off of one
record to be able to put out the next. But as long as you're happy with
what you put out, it'll be worth it. I'm still very proud of my reissue of
R. Stevie Moore's PHONOGRAPHY, even though I'm still several thousand
dollars in the hole because of it.
