I got right into their album a few weeks back....barely even noticed there
was no bass at first, the production is so lush.
The guy has the voice of an angel. So long as you can forgive the Travisisms
you're in for a treat...
I 'm rather fond of Keane myself. I first heard them on an archived KCRW
broadcast from late last year ; there is also a 2nd KCRW performance from
early June in the archives. I liked them enough to buy 4 of their UK singles
(their B-sides are worth the import price) ; the full length CD wasn't
released until May. Tom Chaplin indeed has an angelic, emotional voice. When
I saw them live a couple of months ago, I was amazed. It was incredible at
how an unassuming trio put on such a big performance. Tim Rice-Oxley plays a
Yamaha CP 70 electric piano ; he really throws his whole body into banging
that piano. During their live set, he also has a laptop computer with bass
sounds on it. He plays bass on the CD and used to play bass in their
original lineup which included electric and acoustic guitar. Richard Hughes
plays drums and fills out the songs rather nicely (thanks to him, I
collected my first drumstick from a gig ; he didn't toss it into the crowd,
he came to the front of the stage and handed it to me). They're on a North
American tour in September with the French Kicks as their support act. I
believe that tickets for most of the shows are on sale. They have sold out
several dates on their UK tour in November. Their official website has
several audio and video clips (http://www.keanemusic.com) ; I also recommend
a very thorough fan site (http://www.keane.at).
Cheers,
Jennifer
