Saw two nights back-to-back last weekend -- Friday in NYC (SummerStage in
Central Park) and Saturday in Boston (Fleet Pavilion), and it was very
interesting seeing how different each show was.

The venue Friday night was considerably smaller but considerably more open
air; Fleet Pavilion is tent-covered and had wind baffles around most of the
sides. I'd have expected the sound to be better in Boston, considering that
it was a more controlled environment than a completely open air venue, but
it was really flawless and crystal clear in NYC and horrific in Boston.
Granted, I was in the second row in Boston and I think they probably set
levels based on midway back in the house, but there was all kinds of
muddiness and echo. Bass was very boomy and thick, flanging in the vox and
guitars, really awful.

Sound issues aside, the performances were night and day different as well.
They seemed a lot more loose-limbed and into the crowd in NYC -- played a
few more encores, generally seemed to be having more fun. One of the
goofiest things was how Tim kept wailing away at the stage with a towel, as
though it was a guitar he was trashing. He was thoroughly manic that night.
Dunno if they were having an off-night in Boston or if the venue and/or
crowd just didn't have the right vibe.

I look forward to hearing the full album, though I'll admit that two of the
three iTunes offerings don't do much for me. From the live sets, the
full-on band treatment of "Edible Flowers" really grabbed me (a song that
left me cold in its solo piano version on "7 Worlds Collide") and "Anything
Can Happen" is killer (or as they say in Bahston, "wicked pissa"). And of
course, the back-catalog of "Woodface"-era Crowded House and Split Enz hits
were all superb. Surprised that the Finn Bros' first album was covered so
sparsely...

Anyway, good shows indeed.
