Caught the last Finn Brothers show of the tour in Austin last night. I've
seen Neil and/or Crowded House about seven or eight times over the past
decade and I hate to report this was far and away the worst show of them
all. It wasn't that Neil and Tim weren't in fine form and good spirits.
They were. But the sound was as muddy as the worst concert I've ever seen.
The guitar player (I think his name was Jim Spencer) was out of tune on well
over half of his songs. During numerous songs throughout the evening, he
was trying (without success) to tune his guitars. He switched a guitar
during mid-song once after repeated attempts to get it in tune. And his
guitar was so far out in front of the whole mix that it was difficult to
hear the vocals or other instruments. I don't know if Tim and Neil heard it
all night, but if they did, they didn't let on.

All in all, a dreadful concert, sorry to say. I had so looked forward to
this show because of the glowing reviews in other cities, but this was the
Finn low point, performance-wise, in my experience. On the bright side, it
is always good just to see them play and listen to their banter. And it was
cool to see former Jellyfish bassist Tim Smith in the lineup as well.

On a final note, the new Finn Brothers CD is simply outstanding. Those guys
have more talent in their little fingers than most folks can even cream of.
A sure-fire Top 3 disc for 2004.

Best,
Rick
