The Sex Pistols were a shock factor act. They couldn't sing very well, and
they couldn't play very well...but their attitude *couldn't* be ignored.

Nirvana happened along at the right time...just as millions of aging hippies
took their flannel shirts down to the Goodwill dumpster on the corner for
recycling. And while the usual suspects here bring forth all they can to
relay their feelings that the Beatles had little effect on our society and
music in general, what is tell-tale to me in the discussion is that there
are quite a few Beatles tracks that you could ask folks on the street about
that *might* spark a hint of recognition. However, with Nirvana, you can
mention "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and maybe the "What else can I say?
Everyone is gay" song (damn if I can remember the title!), but beyond that,
unless you start talking about rockers who've **offed** themselves, there
just isn't much else to talk about that anyone outside of the 20-35 year old
age group would register with.

FWIW, I'm glad I'm old enough to have experienced both The Beatles and
Nirvana.

As a result, there's no question here who made the biggest splash in the
pond during their respective eras.
