There's two!!!
And I know the answer because I tried to license the rights to the song so
we could create a line of personalized birthday CDs. "Happy Birthday" has
its own publishing company...it was staffed by 12 people when I enquired in
1992. It is the single largest grossing song in the history of mankind. The
waiting period for license approval was 18 to 24 months. The fee itself is
nearly 90% of the gross revenue for whatever the song is being used
for....musical greeting cards, albums, movies, radio, etc. The annual gross
is between $15 and 20 million a year in licensing fees. Almost all of the
money goes to charity. And that's just on the money they CAN collect from
legit licensees....imagine the gross were they able to nail down all the
other uses (like singing it in the shower!).
