I whole heartedly agree with Mike about Ken's record as contender for Album of the Year (my other nominees would include Chris Stamey and Vinyl Candy). I've been luckily to have it for about 3 months and it keeps on getting better with each listen. Not as immediately hooky as Posies material, but deeper and more rewarding for those that hang in with it.

Also caught Ken here in Charlotte last Tuesday night. The downside is that only about 30 people or so were in attendance. The upside is that Ken didn't care and played his heart out. Like the Chicago show, he played the last 5 songs out in the audience. Included were covers of Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, and Cheap Trick's Voices.

A Posies playing anything by the Beach Boys and Cheap Trick really is like "your peanut butter is on my chocolate...your chocolate is in my peanut butter..." It doesn't get much better than that.

NP: VHS or Beta- very Franz Ferdinand like, so far so good.

I saw him last night at Schubas -- just Ken with his guitar or piano. His
new album, SOFT COMMANDS, is a clear contender for my album of the year
(battling Franz Ferdinand, Mission of Burma and a couple of others). The
contrast between his gripping emotional songs, which he pours his heart and
soul into, and his engaging and frequently hilarious stage patter, makes him
all the more incredible. He mixed songs from the new one with other solo
stuff. He ended the night with two solo songs from amongst the crowd. If
you go to my Chicago Pop Show Report Yahoo Group, linked below, you can see
a picture.

Tonight, The Posies are playing the Wicker Park Fest (the rhythm section
joined Ken for some tequila shots, after a fan sent 4 up to the stage),
which should be terrific. On the way out of the bar, I walked past Jon Auer
and I looked at him, and glanced at me in a way that he knew that I knew who
he was. Weird -- like telepathy, or something.

On another note -- I just wanted to say that the Rooney comment has produced
some of the most enjoyable responses from folks -- Mr. Carpenter, Bruce,
Jaimie, Jason and others, thanks for the entertaining and thought provoking
posts.

Of course, it should be noted that the major label artists who are prolific,
aren't good (Phish, anyone???).
