Lasting Legacy
You probably don't know his name, and you wouldn't recognize his face. But
he's been as much a part of the soundtrack of your life as the Beatles,
Nirvana or Eminem.
He's Jerry Goldsmith, and when the 75 year-old composer died in his sleep
from cancer Wednesday, he left behind a symphony of sound familiar to the
ears of nearly every TV and movie watcher.
Goldsmith was the man who penned the theme songs to such hit shows as "The
Twilight Zone", "Perry Mason", "The Waltons", "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and
"Star Trek: The Next Generation".
He also wrote scores of scores for the big screen, including music from box
office blockbusters like "Chinatown", "The Mummy", "Rambo: First Blood",
"Papillon" and "Alien", and most of the "Star Trek" movies.
Goldsmith started studying music at age 6, and unlike the piano lessons most
moms force kids to take, his paid off. He wound up with 5 Emmys for his
television work and 17 Oscar nominations - winning only one, for 1976's "The
Omen".
But his presence is still felt at Hollywood's biggest party. It was
Goldsmith who wrote a fanfare used at the Academy Awards to this day.
"He could write anything. He did Westerns, comedies," notes his personal
assistant Lois Carruth. "He preferred writing for more character-driven,
quiet films but somehow they kept coming back to him for the action films."
And for just about everything else. Goldsmith's last work hit the screen in
2003, with the soundtrack for "Looney Tunes: Back in Action".
He's survived by his wife, five children, six grandkids, one great
grandchild - and a lifetime of musical memories.
