Back in '98, when word first got out that International Pop Overthrow was
going to happen, amid the many positive reactions were also those from the
naysayers, who sniffed "ahhh, this festival's just gonna have a bunch of
bands who wear Beatle boots and whose songs sound like their parents' record
collections, etc..." This stereotype, while not true even at that time (I
mean, sure, we had, and always will have, Beatle-inspired power pop bands at
IPO, but surely not "just" that type), is significantly less accurate now,
as I have made a concerted effort to broaden the stylistic base of the bands
at the festival. We've got indie-rock bands like Sweetness,
shoegazer-inspired bands like Meow Meow, "new rock" bands like The Vacation,
the soulful pop of bands like The Hatch, etc...along with, of course,
traditional power pop artists. Nonetheless, the stereotype still exists in
the perceptions of some people but, as it is with anything else in life,
stereotypes die hard and I have to accept that.
This is one of the reasons why these two posts, taken together, are
extremely gratifying to me. Of course, it's never fun to hear that someone
doesn't like an IPO band, but when a band is loved by some and hated by
others, it's a sign that the goal of diversity that I'm trying to achieve
with IPO is beginning to be reached.
