I agree with the trouble of "organizing" the music correctly. Sometimes I think it coul dbe much more user friendly. I bought an RCA Lyra 40 gig unit. I'm amazed that I have 6000+ tracks on it from my CD collection. I can take it to the beach for the afternoon and virtually select ANY of my favorite albums from my collection to listen to. I can even select albums I don;t really like!!

For portability sake, it is awesome. Sound quality.....I call it decent. Good earbuds (SHURE) do make a big difference. Is it completely user friendly? No, but it is bearable.
Have I had problems? Yes...bought a second 20 gig RCA Lyra to keep at work and load new CD's onto. It crapped out after 1 week. No clue what was wrong, but I called RCA and they sent me a prepaid package to return it to them. 5 days later I had a brand new one and it works fine.

To tell you the truth though....I kind of prefer my portable mini disc players / recorders though. The discs are small and hold up to 80 mnutes of music and the sound quality, to these old and battered eardrums, is very good. Around the corner is coming the ne HI-MD MiniDisc Units and Discs. Supposedly, these new units can record up to 45 hours of music onto 1 disc. It will be like a removable hard drive in the form of a very small disc.

They look interesting!

I bought the Dell DJ - a ton cheaper than the ipod, and I absolutely love
it. I take music almost everywhere I go - players in almost every room,
speakers wired to the backyard and garage, mp3 player in the car - but I had
to have something better than a little boombox when I get out and work in
the yard out of range of my backyard speakers. Quality is great, interface
is very well done. My only complaint, and I'm sure it is the case with all
these players, is the way they organize the music and use tags. I got it to
organize the way I wanted by writing my own MP3 tag program and
experimenting with different tag formats until I got it to where I was able
to navigate to what I wanted to find pretty quickly. I also bought an addon
called Dudebox, that I believe is available for many of the popular players.
It does seem to make the transfer process a little easier. It also has an
line out that I can use to connect to my stereo or even connect to my car
player for a road trip without discs.

a sad iPod story.

I have been wanting one for the longest time, but clearly not something I
could just charge, being a luxury item and all. so I finally get the money
together, right before a long road trip.
I drive 30 minutes to the only store in the area that has the 20g model.
I take it home, open it, follow all the directions closely. Then I finally
start to upload my songs, got to 800+ when the thing just dies on me.
Tried to recharge the battery, nothing. Called Apple, nothing. Took it back
to the store, "sorry sir, but this iPod appears to have a defective
battery."
Of course they did not have another 20g in stock, so I am packing my cds to
take with me. Not a good first experience with an Apple product.
