Nellie McKay did a free showcase gig at the Paradise Lounge, which is just
down the street from my house, a week or two before SXSW. The place was
packed solid and they were turning folks away at the door. She absolutely
commanded the room, with nothing but herself and an electric piano.

"Ma-Kai" is the traditional Scots pronunciation of her name, sort of how
the lead singer from Simple Minds pronounced his last name "Care." Her dad
was Scottish, her mom's American and she bounced back and forth between
continents growing up...which also explains why she has a weird sort of
mid-Atlantic accent that she slips into sometimes.
