I'm listening to an advance of the new Waxwings
album -- so far it's pretty good! I guess it doesn't
arrive in stores until Sept. 14th (it'll be available
from Rainbow Quartz International). It's produced
by Brendon Benson, who, according to the email,
"captured their grittier side by recording most
of the tracks live at his Grand Studio in the motor
city." He'll be joining the Waxwings (on guitar) on
their summer tour too
Payback, evidently, as Waxwings leader Dean Fertita was in Benson's most
recent backing band.
Conscience forces me to confess that both Mike Bennett and I kept staring at
Fertita during Benson's set at the Taste of Randolph Street festival last
month here in Chicago, wondering, "Who *is* that familiar-looking guy
playing guitar?" When Benson introduced Fertita, both Mike and I slapped our
foreheads in chagrined wow-I-could've-had-a-V8 fashion.
Moral of the story: Even if you can work Dave Edmunds back to Ike Turner
within four degrees of separation, you're still susceptible to sometimes
being stumped by the obvious (and I think Mike'll agree with me that, given
the ubiquity of the Waxwings within midwestern power-pop circles, Dean
Fertita's identity should've been obvious -- or at least somewhere within
the same zip code as obvious).
