hey all:
anyone wanting to play "navigate kelly's brain" may
have fun with this this morning...category is videos,
early 80s, in the funky soul genre peopled with folks
like The Gap Band and The Dazz Band and Jeffrey
Osborne and Shalamar..in fact, what I'm thinking of
was potentially shalamar, but I can't find anything
that sounds like the songs I remember. There was some
kind of mid-level hit song that had a video where the
main dude (of a trio? possibly wearing a cape?) was
sort of stalking some girlie, but seemed not to be
able to show himself...and there was a mask involved,
like he was at some kind of decadent costume party?
which might have looked something like the Phantom of
the Opera mask, kind of white and impersonal, or was
maybe even a harlequin mask. Anyway, as i remember it,
the video was sort of a sleeper hit, and so they made
a SEQUAL to the video with another song, and it began
with some kind of "AND THE SAGA CONTINUES..." on the
screen, with a slo-mo shot of the mask again, so you
knew the videos were linked. And possibly, silk and
feathers were involved. And a building that had
several floors overlooking an atrium of some sort.
Christ, did he actually swing on a rope over that
atrium? Nah, I must be making that part up.
So what am I thinking? Am I confusing my costumeball
video with Laura Branigan's "No Self Control" video,
which also (i think) had masks and felt claustrophobic
and stalkerish? and god, didn't quarterflash have a
video like that too? And where does "Dancing in the
Sheets" fit into this all?
your opinions are appreciated, as well as your warm
wishes towards me in my increasingly obvious senility.
