I thought NYC-area Auditeers with adventurous ears might be interested in
hearing about an upcoming gig-of-a-lifetime I'm a part of. And if not,
pardon my mostly-off-topic post.

Anyway, here's the deal: I'm in a choir that will be performing the U.S.
premiere of a major work by British composer John Tavener (Paul McCartney's
favorite composer! (putting this vaguely on topic)), The Veil of the Temple,
on July 24 at Avery Fisher Hall as the rousing conclusion of this summer's
Lincoln Center Festival. The work was conceived as a night-long vigil
celebrating the Temple Church in London, and our performance will start at
10:30pm and run till (gulp) 5:30am. Sounds insane, yes, but odds are,
unless you're a devout follower of Eastern Orthodox Christianity and
attended a full-blown vigil of this sort, you'll rarely have an opportunity
like this. And even if you *are* a devout follower of Eastern Orthodox
Christianity, you'll rarely have an opportunity like this.

The piece, while rooted in Christian belief and tradition, is intended to be
universalist in scope, including Hindi elements, Sufi elements, and
languages ranging from English to Latin to Greek to Russian. It really is
unlike anything you'll ever hear. The music ranges from simple chant to
extraordinarily rich (and very accessible) melodies, solo singing to 140
voice massed choral bliss.

What's more, Avery Fisher Hall will be transformed for the event into a
unique performance space - they're taking out the front half of the
orchestra level seating and putting in a performance platform in the center
and cushions on the floor for the audience. Audience members are welcome to
come and go as they please (tickets are general admission), move around the
hall, lounge out and let the music wash over, or just plain sleep.

If anyone is even remotely interested in hearing more about this, drop me an
e-mail and I can see about hooking you up with discount tickets. And again,
my apologies if I offended anyone with this post, but it really will be a
once-in-a-lifetime event. I can't bear to think that anyone who might be
into this would miss the chance. And hey, maybe Macca will be there!

Christopher
