Okay, I get it! The Stereophonics are in the UK what Dave Matthews Band is
in the US. --J

<<I can't claim to speak for anyone other than myself and my mates, but the
Stereophonics are irritating on a number of levels. Firstly, there's the
affected voice and accent. Yes, lots of people do it, but his is
particularly fake on slower, quieter songs. Enough of the croaking Kelly,
you're not Rod Stewart. Secondly, there's the fanbase they've built up in
the UK. While they still attract a large number of bright young music fans,
they seem to make their money out of insurance reps and travelling salesmen.
There can't be a Vauxhall Vectra travelling the M4 that doesn't have a
Stereophonics album stuffed in the glove-box. Thirdly, as a fellow
Welshman, I find Kelly Jones's ego unacceptable.
Yep, they're crap reasons. But there's a loosely grouped collection of
bands in the UK who are frequently termed "dad-rock". Paul Weller, Ocean
Colour Scene, Toploader, David Gray... and Stereophonics are edging ever
closer to that. It's comfortable, conformist "rock" music that is loved by
kids, parents and, I guess, grandparents. There's a place for that, but not
within a hundred metre radius of me, please. We've already got Status Quo
(and the Alarm), so we don't really need the Stereophonics.
No offence intended to anyone here who really likes them; particularly if
you're not British. If you're not treated to the Stereophonics coverage we
get in the UK, there's no reason why you should be fed up with Kelly's
muppet-style face and glass-gargling croak.>>
