Nah, Ric's lived in New York for awhile now, if not since the Cars' heyday.
He's actually currently the VP of A&R (or some title very similar to that)
for Elektra, which is pretty cool, though I honestly couldn't tell you who he's
signed. But his Boston days are long over.
It's actually something of a legendary Newbs story how the Cars would record
the cuts for "Shake It Up" overnight in Synchro Sound on Newbury Street and
then come directly across the street first thing in the morning to buy stuff
at Newbury Comics right when they opened. That's the only album they ever
recorded at Synchro Sound, though, and it's long since been turned into a shoe
store (Stewart? Is that right?)
As far as rare Ocasek stuff, you got me. I know that in 1993, "Quick Change
World" was originally intended as a double album packaged with a book of
poetry, but it was trimmed to a single disc (with "Right side" and "Left Side")
and the poetry was lopped off completely... I really don't know if it ever
surfaced. However, the "left side" (I believe) was released in Germany (!?!?!)
at some point under the title "Negative Theater" and I bought a copy around
1999. Not sure if it's still in print but while it has a few tracks that
overlap with the album, most of it is available only there. Also Ric put out an
album sometime in the mid-90s with Alan Vega and Gillian Welch called
"Getchertiktz" that was basically just spoken-word poetry over arty soundscapes, so
that might be the closest thing kicking around.--Jason
