...but I've had this weird infatuation lately with a super-schmaltzy '70s
tune.
It's "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook.
Maybe it's the tear-jerking subject matter. Perhaps it's that irresistible
part in the chorus where the lead singer with the eyepatch pleads
"Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase." Or most likely, it could be because that by the time
we get to the third verse, Eyepatch Guy sings with such an audible lump in his
throat and catch---no, sob---in his voice that you get the feeling that he
might just fall apart after his three minutes on the pay phone are up and go
into a McDonald's and start shooting.
And yes, Mr. Kevin Mathews, the Lolas new CD is most righteous. I think I
may have called them "The Future of Power Pop" a while back. Can I say it
again? Oh, I just did.
