I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of using cliches in my writing on occasion (some with say with tremendous regularity, and I don't know that I could necessarily argue that, either), but I recently found a press release that was such a horrible offender in the field of comparisons that I quoted it verbatim in the review.

“In the Fantasy Music Café, at a side table, The Beatles are discussing philosophy with Mose Allison and Bob Dylan. Onstage, They Might Be Giants are jamming with Little Walter, as overhead the astral ghost of Syd Barrett strums eerie chords on a transparent Electric Sitar. The Barenaked Ladies and Moxy Fruvous peek through the window at Lou Reed, who wipes down the bar and pours a drink for Tom Waits. Suddenly, there's a drum roll, and MC Bootsy Collins announces the next act...The Muppets performing their set of covers by the Damned!”

I didn't feel that I had to add much more than, "If you suspect that the album can’t possibly live up to being a combination of all of these artists…well, you’re right." (Even worse, however, was that IT DIDN'T SOUND LIKE *ANY* OF THOSE ARTISTS!!!)

The end result of the review was a testy letter from the artist in question...but, seriously, that paragraph did more harm than good when it came right down to it...
