What is it about us power-poppers that we seem to need our beloved music to
be so self-referential?? I mean I love The Beatles to death, but over the
last few years I've probably listened to more Beatles soundalikes than I
have listened to the originals. That's not to say the copies are as good
as the originals - invariably they don't come close - but I think the
reason for listening so intently is that I like to spot the references.
For example, one song might sound like something off Hard Day's Night,
another one is like Rain, oh and here they're going for the Abbey Road
vibe. Maybe my friend has it in a nutshell: when I ask him which Beatles
song another band's effort reminds him of, he always replies that they
invariably sound like Swingin' Blue Jeans b-sides!!

And it ain't just the Beatles though, I also find myself listening to bands
trying to spot where they've ripped off The Kinks or Badfinger or The
Raspberries or The Beach Boys ..... and NotLame's website regularly
describes bands, not by saying WHAT they sound like, but by WHO they sound
like.

No wonder some "non-believers" think one day we will disappear up our own
collective backside!! Probably that'll be the day where The Beatles reform
(with Dhani Harrison and Julian Lennon obviously) and do a Spongetones
tribute.

Yet still I love this stufff all the same. My recent fave Beatles
soundalikes: The Winnerys album (well, the first 4 or 5 tracks) and some
songs off The Singles elpee. And all-time fave Raspberries cop is Hey
Now! (Motor City) by The Vandalias. So there.

B^)
