What about Grass Roots v. Evergreen Blues versions of the latter's 
"Midnight Confession"?  For having grown up in a Grass 
Roots-dominated part of the world I always assumed that theirs was 
the only hit, but EGB obviously charted in many parts of the country 
as well...

Another odd situation used to come up in the garage-rock days when 
bands would cover "Baby Please Don't Go" since the equally-familiar 
versions by Them and the Amboy Dukes used bass-lines intervals that 
differ by a half-step (ta to Andy Paley for first pointing out what 
was causing the problem...). Them is cooler/more menacing:
