With the talk about the different renditions of "Gloria," I was reminded of a couple of other versions that haven't been mentioned. Back in the mid-'80s, a New York City garage group named The Tryfles recorded a song called "Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)" that neatly merged the '60s garage tune with the chorus from the "Angels We Have Heard on High" hymn. It appeared on a Christmas compilation released by Midnight Records called "A Midnight Xmas Mess" (which also featured a great Cheepskates song called "Christmastime With You").
And a band called The Belles recorded a clever alternate-gender version of that song called "Melvin" (M-E-L-V-I-N!). It was covered by The Pandoras, a California garage band from the '80s.
Be seeing you,
Bill
