Emerging from deep-lurk...
I never minded getting compared to other artists in the press -- to me it was always a reflection of whether the writer really "got" was I was doing or not. Some of the comparisons I've received have been truly thrilling (Neil Finn, Costello, Aimee Mann), some have been merely annoying (Alanis Morrisette or the chick pop-rocker du jour). But if done well and with thought, comparisons can really help push things along.
Besides, people continually ask artists who they "sound like", so you have to be ready with an answer, and if you try to avoid the question you just end up sounding kinda pretentious.
