the thing of it is, i think, that clichés cannot be avoided all the time, no matter what a great writer one may be. i have a serious aversion to clichéd and hackneyed expressions-BUT- when used creatively, and with good and specific purpose, they can be very handy at the same time that they are striking. it is true, as well, that an over-used expression can often reach a broader range of people to elicit more widespread understanding- if you say, "more hooks than 'so-and-so', i may not get the comparison or contrast and be unable to imagine what sort of quality is being communicated to me, fyou know what i mean. i'm just saying that clichés can be used effectively and they can take on a creative and interesting function if one is a fine communicator. they need not to be condemned across-the-board. in a sense, all that we use as speech IS, in fact, cliché and hackneyed, don't you think? every word and phrase i've just used- could even be called plagiarized... taking this a bit
 too far, perhaps...

Funny you say this cause I always found BTO to be a prime
offender of that sort of reviewing at times.
I sometimes think it is because of the sheer volume of stuff they cover.
I still love the magazine, but many times after reading a review I would
just scratch my head.
