KHJ was THE Top 40 station in LA in the 60's to late 70's. (although KRLA was
also great). After they signed on Top 40 radio was never the same. Programmer
Bill Drake got rid of the long DJ raps (called "Clutter") and letting jocks
pick thier own music. He restricted the jocks to keep the chatter to a minumum
and ran a small tight playlist of 30 well-researched hits and few oldies.

I think KHJ-TV was an independant station at the time. I also remember KCOP
channel 13 - which used to run classic Warner Brother cartoons in the morning
and Gilligan's Island and Leave it to Beaver in the afternoon. Lots of old
movies too. Goleta had one of the first cable companies in the nation at the
time (1968 when they came in) and we only had one local TV station in Santa
Barbera (channel 3 running ABC) so my family watched LA TV stations a lot when
I was a kid.

I still bang my head against my computer desk when I realise that I could have
made tapes of those Top 40 stations when I was a kid but taped my freinds
and I
singing along to an osmonds record instead.
