Some stray comments on a post-holiday Tuesday morning. I picked up the
Shrek 2 soundtrack after seeing the movie the other day. As usual, the
movie and CD feature a variety of covers (I've always wondered why
movies don't more often use the originals - I can only assume it has to
do with $, but am willing to be educated). I've always thought the best
movie for quality covers had to be CLUELESS, but that's just me.

Somebody here had mentioned Butterfly Boucher, and her cover (with
Bowie) of "Changes" is nice enough. Of course, I always wonder when I
hear covers that are THIS faithful what the point really was - see also
Doubt, No - "It's My Life").

Pete Yorn's take on the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love" is worthy
enough, although not in the same class as the original.

The real revelation here, while a furlong or so off-Audities, is still
cool as hell. The Brit group Frou Frou does this downbeat, trip-hop
cover of "Holding Out for a Hero" that takes the song places it has
never been before. Best thing on the CD by far.

...it's a lonesome thing to be passing small towns with the
lights shining sideways when the night is down, or going in
strange places with a dog nosing before you and a dog nosing
behind, or drawn to the cities where you'd hear a voice
kissing and talking deep love in every shadow of the ditch,
and you passing on with an empty, hungry stomach failing
from your heart.
