For those Auditeers who are heavily into The Beatles as I am, or even like them a bit, then allow me to plug this particular band and their CD "A Little Trip"... Run don't walk to www.cdbaby.com and pick up a copy of The Vinyl Kings... I've listened to and appreciated many Beatle-influenced bands in the past, but this particular band will grab you by the shirt collar (or blouse mind you...) and launch a musical attack that will hit you from all sides of your 5 senses... When my disc arrived yesterday I was on my to run some errands... Got in the car, opened the envelope as I drove off, tore off the shrink wrap and with a; "Well let's see what we have here" mindset, popped the CD into the player... As the first 5 seconds of cut #1 began with the sound of girls screaming (Beatlemania circa '64) I thought; "Oh no, don't tell me this is gonna be a tacky live simulated Beatle rippoff"... THEN The Vinyl Kings came in an started singing about being 10 years old and turning on the TV and there was Ed Sullivan, then the screams started to make sense; they were providing a mental video of the song... When they got to the chorus and sang "I took a trip..." all of a a sudden a VERY McCartneyish swooping bass line a-la "Rain" delivered a one-two punch combination because I couldn't believe that they were combining the jangly sound of the early Beatle records with the progressive sound of their "Rain" period... cut-after-cut The Vinyl Kings were blowing me away with powerful guitar chords, perfect harmonies and so many naunces... Another song exploded with a guitar line similar to Harrison's "And Your Bird Can Sing"... McCartney's tender yet witty ballads were presented in so many different forms and towards the end of the disc Lennon's "I Am The Warlus" uniqueness just came down on me like a psychedelic rainfall... Cut #13 and I'm wishing that the CD would have at least 10 more songs to go... but alas the trip (and believe me it was a magical mystery trip) was coming to an end.. As song #13 ended I thought "The only thing missing is a "hidden song" at the end like the Fabs used to do"... and lo and behold there it was, a short instrumental snippet that seemed to wink an eye at you and say... "You think we'd left eh?"... Sorry for ramblin' but I had not been as excited about a release in such a long time... Vinyl Kings, if you're out there reading this, please do it again, and again and real soon...
