This reminds me of another encounter... Back in '85 or '86, Timothy Leary made a public speaking appearance at Lehigh U. in Bethlehem, PA. I didn't know much about him, but knew he was a major celebrity back in the '60s, and was involved in psychedelia, so I tried to find something appropriate for him to autograph in case I had an opportunity to meet him. I arrived early and made my way to a hallway behind the auditorium, where I found him sitting on a chair with nobody else around. I walked up and said hello, then asked him to autograph my "Velvet Underground & Nico" album. He looked at it, turned it over, and said, "Boy, this sure was a fine record." He was very friendly, and I think it looks mighty cool with his autograph on the cover.
I also enjoyed getting to meet Ron Peno and Brett Myers from the Australian band Died Pretty (one of my faves) when they played at the Marquee in NYC in support of their Every Brilliant Eye album. A friend and I saw Keith Streng of The Fleshtones heading backstage after the show, so we asked if he'd bring us with him. We ended up hangin' with Ron and Brett for a half hour or so (incl. autographs) as they shared a case of Rolling Rock with us. It was fun hearing them talk about their songs, lyrics, etc. with Keith.
Another guy who was a real pleasure to meet was Martin Phillips from The Chills (New Zealand), who drew pictures and signed some CD's I presented to him.
