When I was at Penn State in the mid-to-late-80's, The Feelies came to play
in a small room in the student union building. The show was sponsored by
WPSU, the on-campus radio station where I worked, and I was excited that
they were coming. Unfortunately, the gig was on the same night that R.E.M.
was playing in Pittsburgh, so it was a very small crowd for The Feelies.
When meeting the band after the show, I blurted out that it was a shame that
R.E.M. was playing the same night, otherwise they would have had a bigger
crowd. No sooner were the words out of my mouth when I realized how that
must have sounded to them ("oh sure, if a more popular band wasn't playing
somewhere else maybe there'd have been a bigger crowd here"). The Feelies,
to their credit, never batted an eye. They were as pleasant as could be,
and although I felt bad for what I said, they didn't react negatively at
all.

interview--they hijacked it and turned it into a 90-minute call-in show.
Truly hilarious), and Mike Watt. There was one show Firehose played at the
grimy little San Jose club Marsugi's in 1990 or so; I was rather depressed
that day, as all my friends were at SXSW or some such and I was the only one
among them who had to remain in town. I walked into the crowded club when
the band had just started; after they finished their first song, Watt
pointed at me and yelled, "Hey! Hi! Guy with the tie!" which was my radio
nickname at the time. That made my whole night.
