Yep ... you're right. I shop at the Borders in Camp Hill, Pa. (just outside
Harrisburg) and it's obviously lovingly tended to and cared for by the
people on staff there.
Additional bias -- they occasionally book my friends for acoustic shows (Hi,
Larry Kennedy) so that's additional impetus to shop there.

That said, I also try to frequent B-Sides Records in nearby Mechanicsburg,
Pa., a wonderful indie shop with a terrific selection.
Record Connection in Ephrata, Pa., has an unparalleled power-pop section
(the only devoted section I've ever seen in any store.)
And I've just learned that a new indie called (of course) Championship, is
on the verge of opening in Harrisburg. So I will gladly go there and spend
money as well.

If given my druthers, I will gladly choose the little guy over the corporate
behemoth any day. But, if the corporate behemoth is my only option, I'll
give my money to my local Borders since there's obviously some passion and
intellgence that goes into the record department there.

Don't even get me started on Barnes & Noble ...

john.

far. I do try to shop at the independents, particularly a wonderful little
independent named AKA Music in Philadelphia.

Mawr, Pennsylvania. Unlike the Borders in the nearby upscale King of
Prussia Mall, the Bryn Mawr Borders' music department is clearly run by
music fans. It's as if a separate indie record store was placed inside a
Borders. I think the music area is twice the size of a typical Borders and
the depth and variety of the selections is really quite good. Their catalog
prices are not the best as some other retailers, but they do run quite a lot
of instore sales. They also host a few instore appearances...I caught a
short acoustic set by Nick Lowe about a year ago.

overpriced. I don't know if I would call that evil, but you would have to
be pretty stupid to buy anything from their music department.
