Jocelyn, I totally agree! I was reminiscing about my
encounters with Rhett and the 97's on another list I'm
on just last night. before meeting them over a label
arranged dinner about 5-6 years ago, a couple people I
know used to pass him off as a pretty boy with a
guitar, but once I met him I know that's not the
complete story!!! super smart, down to earth, well
read and incredibly kind. ever since that time, he's
always remembered me and my name. when the solo cd
was about to be released, there was a very small
listening party here in DC (there were like 15 of us)
and he said hello and was confused a little (as I used
to live in atlantic city/philly area)...

we chatted like two crazed music fans (he was
legitimately excited that Robyn Hitchcock performed on
the album) and I was so excited, as I was able to
talk with him at considerable length both before and
after his short set. I do admit to being a little
like a nervous star-struck fan once early on when I
gave him a 'hank williams for president' pin (courtesy
of The The's album promotion).

I'm not a big autograph collector per se, but do like
to talk with 'stars'...

another major encounter was back in college, I was in
Athens, GA for spring break (what R.E.M. fan doesn't
do this at least once?!) and we went out to see some
local bands at 40 Watt. Trinket was one of the bands
playing, (back when they were just a four-piece
straightforward rock n roll band) who happened to have
some stuff produced by Michael Stipe.
He was sitting at the bar sipping a drink, and at the
time I didn't drink at all (i know it might be hard to
believe for some), so I didn't have the courage to go
say hello or a reason to go to the bar. I'm slightly
more courageous now.

I will have to say one of the cooler things I've ever
been a part of is getting to hang out in Glenn
Mercer's basement in North Jersey for a party. there
was some jam sessions going on and all the members of
the Feelies were indeed there, but I don't think they
all were playing at the same time! I just recall
Glenn's daughter, riding her tricycle around the room
and asking Uncle Dave if she could play drums!!!!
This was around the time that Wake Ooloo was
performing and my boys, Noise Museum got to do a bunch
of shows with them.

ah, memories....
I'm gettin all teary eyed now.
