I have a new favorite album of 2004 (thus far) and after a dozen or so
listens it just keeps getting better. It's THE SLOW WONDER from Zumpano/New
Pornographers leader A.C. Newman.
The album combines my favorite parts of Zumpano and the New Pornographers
and is, to these ears, more constantly great than any album by either of
those bands. It's perfect summery pop that brings to mind the poppiest bits
of Wilco's "Summerteeth". The sound is equally rooted in California pop and
late 60's British pop (namely Something Else/Village Green era Kinks and a
little Zombies and Move). Sonically the record sounds great (as did
everything by the New Pornographers) and he mixes it up enough to not get
repetitive, which was my mine main problem with both of his previous
projects. But don't get me wrong, I LOVE both of his old bands, I just think
he does it better on his own.
The advance includes the line "you can never decide which is the best track
on the album" which is a major understatement. As each song starts I think
THIS is my favorite song on the record. And then the next one starts....
