As I said, Lennon took the "sell out"....he didn't HAVE let Geffen
manipulate him...Lord, knows Lennon could have just told him to go sod
himself. It isn't the material that I was complaining about (as I said in a
follow-up to original email -- the songs I like)...but in direct A to B
comparison Lennon gave up on himself as a rock and roll icon.

Yeah, that woulda been cool, but the Cheap Trick version sounded great if
you ask me.....can I re-iterate how much of a cow Yoko Ono is for not
allowing ALL this stuff to see the light of day?

I never saw McCartney's path as one that was any different than where he'd
been as a Beatle....he just continued his meandering. Macca was always a
generic writer of populist pap....even as a Beatle -- the only time he
stepped outta the box to say fuck you to Lennon was on "Helter Skelter"
["See, Johnny, I can rock too ya bugger!"]. Of course, Lennon's final word
on that was "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" -- probably the heaviest contender
for the Zeppelin crown at the time.

I guess the big question mark is that we'll never know if Lennon would have
gotten his mojo back had he lived....leaving McCartney plenty of time to
perforate his own legacy and leave us questioning his genius.
