I might be too exhausted to write a full review, but I just wanted to say that
last night's Boston Pop Underground cabaret with Mike Viola was an absolute
blast.

Experimenting with a very loose and informal show format, Mike and Todd kicked
off the evening with some songs that spanned from the good old days of the
superb unreleased classic Blue Thumb album, to the shining moments on the
newest release "Hang On Mike." Mike and Todd have a special chemistry
unmatched by any other Candy Butchers configuration, most noticeable in their
tight and soaring harmonies. The normally chatty bar crowd was hushed and rapt
for much of the show.

Then Bleu took the stage for a few songs, and did that newfangled
looped-recording thing the kids are all doing these days with guitar and
keyboard, to great effect. He also called up an impromptu gathering of his
infamous "Get Up Choir" to accompany him on one number, with Mike V. and Paula
K. joining in.

The lovely and talented Paula Kelly was next up, with various members of the
PK Orchestra joining her, including trumpet and violin. Then Bleu hopped on
stage to join PK in a full-out, impassioned duet of "On My Own," with Paula
Kelley as Patti Labelle and Bleu doing his best Doobie Brother.

But I have to say, the highlight of the evening for me were the two ensemble
numbers. On the stage for an all-star rendition of ELO's "Telephone Line" and
Badfinger's "Come and Get It," were Mike and Todd, Paula and guitarist Aaron
Tap, Bleu, falsetto-master John Powhida from the Rudds, and Dragstrip Courage
frontman Scott Janovitz.

Holy cow, you guys. I wish you ALL could've been there.

Stay tuned, because this seems destined to become yet another monthly Boston
Pop Underground happening. Will keep you posted.

Over & out,
Andrea
