Many of the following are not, by any stretch favourite songs of mine. Some
like Led Zeppelin, I can't even stand as a band...but, the reality
is...these tunes *are* riffola personified:
1. Satisfaction & Bitch - The Rolling Stones
2. I Feel Fine, Day Tripper, Helter Skelter, I Want You (She's So Heavy),
Birthday - The Beatles
3. House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals (that's right kids, plucking is
just riffing slowed down)
4. Wild Thing - The Troggs
5. Communication Breakdown - Zeppelin//Paranoid - Black Sabbath (they're
basically interchangeable)
6. Running With The Devil - Van Halen
7. Enter Sandman - Metallica
8. Highway To Hell & Dirty Deeds - AC/DC
9. Purple Haze & Foxy Lady - Jimi Hendrix
10. Livin' Lovin Maid/Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
11. La Grange - ZZ Top
12. Go For Soda & Lager And Ale - Kim Mitchell
13. Mama Let Him Play - Jerry Doucette
14. Barracuda & Magic Man - Led Zep, er, HEART
15. Do You Feel Like We Do? - Frampton
16. No Matter What - Badfinger
17. All Day And All Of The Night & You Really Got Me - The Kinks
18. School's Out, Eighteen, Desperado, Halo of Flies - Alice Cooper Band
19. Tie Your Mother Down - Queen
20. Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan
Honourable mention: Lindsay Buckingham's wig-out at the end of "Go Your Own
Way"...not a solo...just a riff that repeats with subtle intenstity upon
every pass.
And from the "Bass is a guitar too, duh!" list:
Money & Echoes - Pink Floyd
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Dazed And Confused - Led Zeppelin
I'm Only Sleeping - The Beatles
Gonna Raise Hell - Cheap Trick
100,000 Years & God Of Thunder - KISS
I Dig Rock & Roll Music - Peter, Paul & Mary (just listened to this
recently...the bass holds the entire melody line together...weird).
My Generation & Boris The Spider - The Who
My Sharona - The Knack
Willie & The Poorboys - CCR
Greatest piano riff:
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" - Elton John
