I know it's been a while, but I'm catching up on old digests...

I'm not surprised! I've heard that the current "director" of Noone's back-up band is Vance Brescia, former lead songwriter/singer of The Mosquitos, a Long Island band that I was gonzo about from '83 to '86, when they packed it in. They did the original (better) version of The Monkees' "That Was Then, This Is Now," which Brescia wrote. In those wonderful days, Vance would play solo sets at a dive bar (Gunther's) in his hometown of Northport, NY nearly ever Wednesday night, serving as a human jukebox of great pop music, playing primarily British Invasion and power pop. Among the songs he played were Herman's Hermits "Hold On," "There's a Kind of Hush," "Mrs. Brown..." along with a bunch of Monkees' tunes. It must be a thrill for him to back up one of his musical heroes these days, and it blew his mind in '86 when the Monkees covered his song. The other musicians in the band aren't slouches either - Ken Bussiere (bassist) and Dave Ferrara (drums) were in the amazing Original Sins from Bethlehem, PA.

I *really* dug Falco's "Einzelhaft" LP, featuring the far superior original version of Der Komissar. Although I couldn't understand the lyrics, there were several extremely catchy songs on that album, like Zuviel Hitze and Maschinne Brent (spelling is from memory, so it's probably off). I had the pleasure of meeting him in the summer of '83 while interning for CMJ, and he paid a quick visit to our dingy basement office. I recall asking how long he was going to be in the U.S. and he replied, "I arrive tomorrow, and I leave yesterday." Cracked me up, though I had to wonder if he was playing me...

Be seeing you,
Bill
