Thanks for posting this.  I've always enjoyed Bob Lefsetz' stuff, and this column hit close to the heart for me.  Thirty years later (!), I remain convinced that "Overnight Sensation" shoulda been the hit record it was subtitled as, and that the Raspberries were one of the best bands that powerpop has ever seen.  Listen again to the four LPs they produced back-to-back, and it makes much of what's come since in this genre seem simply redundant.  (And Eric Carmen's subsequent solo career seem, mostly, to be a tragic waste of talent.)
