Continuing "Bill goes out" week...

Wednesday I had to chaperone my pop-punk/ska loving daughter to a 4-band
bill at the local club. Earplugged my way through a couple of really
horrible white-boy-dreadlock-bounce-to-the-4/4-beat shitbands and then
really wondered what I was in for after a 40 minute delay late in the
evening. Fanfare! Explosion of lights! Crowd screams and RUSHES the stage
and Muse came out firing on all three cylinders. Holy shit...this was
Radiohead/Queen with a progressive rock coating. The vocalist's operatic
range was astounding, the songs all really catchy _and_ well constructed,
and they put on a tremendous stage show to boot. How did I miss these guys
for four records? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Last night made the jaunt to Buffalo to see Marah - almost four years to the
day after having a "I have seen the future of music and his name is Bruce
Springsteen" moment. What can I tell you - they are better than ever.
Everything a rock band should be - passion, fire, chops, humor, soul,
guts...if you have not seen these guys you HAVE to. New record is coming out
in a couple of months, and for those who loved KIDS IN PHILLY and hated (or
were confused by) the follow-up, the new songs are back to form. I missed
Gingersol as one of the opening acts, but also highly recommend Lucero, who
wowed me with their alt-country Replacements vibe.
